Jose Tobias is a New York-based actor and independent film producer. He was born in Venezuela in 1975 and became an American citizen in 2012. He transitioned to acting toward the end of his bachelor's degree in literature, when he joined the acting school Luz Columba, studying with acclaimed acting teacher Nelson Ortega.
After performing in telenovelas, commercials and on the stage in Caracas, he moved to the United States in 2002. He lived in Miami for three years and he performed roles in telenovelas and independent film.
After touring in the West Coast of the US, Jose studied with James Price at the Acting Studio in New York. He then entered the MFA program at the Actors Studio Drama School, from which he graduated in 2014, having studied with Elizabeth Kemp and Susan Aston.
Following his MFA, he continued a two-year tenure at the Actors Studio where his performance mentors included Estelle Parsons, Ellen Burstyn and Melissa Leo. Parsons directed Jose in the role of Saint Peter in a production of Guirgis’ THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT. A principal role in CARMEN was also his debut as a producer, shot in New York City.
In addition to acting, Jose’s interests include literature and both electric and classical guitar, as well as choir. But acting is his main pursuit and passion:
"The moment I held my first script I knew that acting was what I had been looking to do with my life,” he says.
